Calculating a Score

During inspection, properties are assigned ratings (on a scale of 1 to 10) in ten categories that make up their overall score:

• Service
• Rooms
• Food & Beverage
• Spa & Fitness
• Attention to Detail
• Generosity & Value
• Wow / Hip Factor
• Architecture & Design
• Location
• Fit to Promise

The individual ratings from the above categories combine to form a hotel's overall score. Therefore, the maximum score a hotel can achieve is 100. However, it is important to note that the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection rating system differs from most others.

Because this system rates hotels on a combination of facilities and qualities that every property may not possess, it is important to examine each hotel rating in greater detail.

For example, it is possible that a particular hotel might not have a spa and fitness facility, or even a food and beverage facility. If this is the case, then the property cannot have a total score of above 80 (minus 10 points each for lacking the above noted facilities.) However, in this rating system, the hotel can still achieve a five-star rating.

How? The Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection recognises that hotels that do not provide spa and fitness facilities or food and beverage facilities can still provide guests with an outstanding experience. However, they do not provide the same overall experience as hotels that do indeed provide these facilities. Thus, they receive a lower overall score.

With this in mind, the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection highly recommends that consumers look not only at the overall score, but also at each individual rating category when choosing a hotel.

In order to be invited to join the Collection a hotel must achieve and maintain a minimum score of 34.

Determining a Star Rating

Next, to help consumers compare our assessment of a hotel to other industry ratings, we translate our score into a star rating.

Rating

Properties are inspected regularly to ensure they continue to meet our high standards. If any hotel fails to do so, it is removed from the collection.
